Woodword and Lothrop

1887 – 1995
Woodword and Lothrops was Washington D.C.’s first department store started in 1887 by Samuel Walter Woodword and Alvin Mason Lothrop.After resisting multiple buyouts the chain was finally bout in 1984 by A. Alfred Taubman for $277 million.The chain was liquidated and in 1995 seven of the remaining stores were sold to J.C. Penny and the rest to Macys department stores.
